October 2015 Graffiti Tracking Update

As of 10-5-2015 Graffiti Taggers have been slowed but persist with less color and acceptance.  As the city has stepped up its efforts to prosecute graffiti vandals and remove graffiti quickly much of the behavior has somewhat waned. The most widely seen group of taggers are using single color wording and shapes as compared to multi-color.

Youthville Graffiti Vandals Caught & Prosecuted

By Katrease Stafford, Detroit Free Press January 14, 2015 Detroit Police have released a photo of two people believed to be responsible for  graffiti that was discovered   in December on the side of a youth recreation center, depicting an angel holding a gun against a police officer.  Detroit Police spokesman Adam Madera said the two suspects, a man and a woman, were recorded by security cameras in the vicinity of the YouthVille Detroit building located in the 7300 block of Woodward Ave. near Lothrop Street. Police believe the graffiti was painted on Dec. 30. YouthVille is a youth development center that offers Detroit children and teens a safe place to participate in programs and receive support.  The graffiti shows a uniformed officer with his hands up. Miami Cop Sees Graffiti Artist ‘Tag’ a Building, Runs Him Over With His Car Delbert Rodriguez Gutierrez, a 21-year-old street artist died after being run over by a Miami police car during a chase in Wynwood. Delbert, who goes by the name ‘Demz’ succumbed to severe brain injury in Jackson Memorial Hospital. He was ‘caught’ tagging a building on December 9 near Northwest 5th Avenue and 24th Street at 2 am. Graffiti are common in Wynwood, an art district in Miami, and it is known that artists go into agreements where they are allowed to tag on buildings. However, in Demz’s case it was not clear whether he had the required permission as police claim that he fled as soon as he saw police was approaching him. Detective Michael Cadavid, who chased Demz in his unmarked patrol car that ran him over, claimed that Demz hid between two cars, jumped out seeing Cadavid, and was accidentally struck under his car.
