October 2015 Graffiti Tracking Update

As of 10-5-2015 Graffiti Taggers have been slowed but persist with less color and acceptance. As the city has stepped up its efforts to prosecute graffiti vandals and remove graffiti quickly much of the behavior has somewhat waned. The most widely seen group of taggers are using single color wording and shapes as compared to multi-color.

Two of the suspects, Tino Guzman, 20, and Rey Ortega, 20, were charged with felonies after security guards at the park identified them as the ones who defaced The Bean shortly before midnight Monday. Silvery white markings were drawn on two sides of the iconic stainless steel sculpture. They were both charged with criminal damage to property and were to appear in bond court later Thursday. The suspects were arrested on Aug. 14 just after 3 p.m. when police responded to a complaint of men spray-painting the abandoned Murdock’s Tire Doctor at the corner of Livernois and Burlingame. Each man now faces a felony charge of malicious destruction of property over $1,000. A sixth suspect is being sought. Craig noted Monday that three of the five suspects are not Detroit residents.
