Miami Cop Sees Graffiti Artist ‘Tag’ a Building, Runs Him Over With His Car Delbert Rodriguez Gutierrez, a 21-year-old street artist died after being run over by a Miami police car during a chase in Wynwood. Delbert, who goes by the name ‘Demz’ succumbed to severe brain injury in Jackson Memorial Hospital. He was ‘caught’ tagging a building on December 9 near Northwest 5th Avenue and 24th Street at 2 am. Graffiti are common in Wynwood, an art district in Miami, and it is known that artists go into agreements where they are allowed to tag on buildings. However, in Demz’s case it was not clear whether he had the required permission as police claim that he fled as soon as he saw police was approaching him. Detective Michael Cadavid, who chased Demz in his unmarked patrol car that ran him over, claimed that Demz hid between two cars, jumped out seeing Cadavid, and was accidentally struck under his car. The Detroit News October 19, 2014 (Photo: Donna Terek , The Detroit News ) A few days ago, Mayor Mike Duggan announced a crackdown on illegal graffiti within the city of Detroit. It's the right move and long overdue for Detroit. Allowing vandals free reign to deface and destroy buildings without punishment has only brought Detroit problems over the past few decades. And unwanted graffiti is definitely not art, as some seem to think. As the city continues to rebuild post-bankruptcy, it's critical the mayor and police demonstrate that even non-violent offenses, like painting buildings without permission, are taken seriously. It's high time for the city to improve its reputation and quality of life for residents and businesses. While Detroit has many violent and serious crimes to pursue on a daily basis, ignoring small crimes such as vandalism has a ripple effect, which leads to more and bigger crimes. The suspects were arrested on Aug. 14 just after 3 p.m. when police responded to a complaint of men spray-painting the abandoned Murdock’s Tire Doctor at the corner of Livernois and Burlingame. Each man now faces a felony charge of malicious destruction of property over $1,000. A sixth suspect is being sought. Craig noted Monday that three of the five suspects are not Detroit residents.
